About

Linda Havenstein (* 1984) is a German video and media artist. She lives and works in Berlin.

According to her own statements, her work deals with the relationship between humans and technology and the cultural implications of the post-digital age.

She graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Japanese Studies, Comparative Literature and Journalism from the University of Leipzig in 2011. Havenstein also attended courses in Cultural Studies at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa and Art Theory at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig.

Linda Havenstein is concerned with processes and structures that underlie everyday experience. In videos and installations, which are based on rhythmic sequences or signal sequences, she condenses cultural and social processes. They are attempts to condense the totality of thought fields into small gestures and thus reflect on the human desire for meaning, cause, and identity. Havenstein deals with codifications and algorhithmic orders and transfers them to language and objects.

Havenstein exhibits in international museums and galleries, including Aomori Contemporary Art Centre Japan, How Art Museum China, NYIT Auditorium in New York, Seoul Museum of Art, and Kunstraum Bethanien in Berlin.

Linda Havenstein has been nominated or awarded various prizes, such as the Changdong Fellow Grant, associated with an artist-in-residency program in Seoul, or the Future Storytelling Production Grant from the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.

Leveling – Video Work 2015-2019

The artist applies facial cream to her face. Applying more and more, she levels out her face and disappears into the
background. First inspired by observations of modern cityscapes and beauty ads, the work is a reflection on human
interference in our living environment and with it eventually ourselves.
